Forest to Fuels

Fuel crops, oil crops, Copperland agriculture

This project aims at providing low-cost heating & lighting to the poor.

Copperland’s project goal is 100% self-sufficiency in fuels and oils used in heavy equipment & personal transportation. Our fuel strategy includes oil crops & methanol production.

Crop selection is based on crops that grow well in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and are relatively easily harvested & processed. Fuel/oil crops currently being investigated are:

  • canola
  • soy
  • corn
  • castor bean
  • sorghum

Process heat & electrical power used in agriculture will include:

  • solar steam
  • biomass steam
  • hydrogen in gas turbines
  • biodiesel in diesel engines
