Harvest time: When a country turns its back on seniors
We just finished watching a Youtube video about a 75-year old woman who is living fulltime in her van in Arizona, and working at a local job to survive. She was told by the government housing authority that she was “better off living in your van” rather than trying to live in an overpriced world on her $800 social security income. She didn’t qualify for housing, because she made $8 too much at her job, and if she quite that job it would take quite awhile to re-apply for housing.
Ken & I had to take a walk, trying to absorb this new reality. It is common. It is heartbreaking. It is infuriating. And it is a sin.
We were brought up to respect our elders, and take care of the weak. That’s what a Christian nation should be doing – and the USA does NOT fit the profile.
Passing the old apple tree around the corner, we saw it was loaded with heavy fruit. Within two hours we had set up a tarp, shook the apples into it, and filled 5 buckets with fruit to be preserved.
If we can do this kind of work, so can the vast majority of people here living from paycheck to paycheck, or squeezing out the last drop of social security money. And true Christians should be sharing their harvests with the poor, not warring on other countries to protect their multi-trillion dollar arms markets.
